United Methodist Women
Our Purpose: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Basically we are a group of women who largely focus on missions, both locally and globally. It is not necessary to be a Methodist to be a member, just a woman who wants to look beyond her immediate self and reach out to others. At the same time, we enjoy the friendships that develop and manage to incorporate some fun into our gatherings.
We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2:00 PM in the Gathering Place which is located in Building "O" on our church property. This applies to 10 months of the year. In November and December our schedule changes due to holidays. We also sponsor ten out to lunch and two out to breakfast events each year strictly for socialization. These are Dutch treat activities and open to everyone.
United Methodist Women is a world wide organization, and as such we do pledge a certain amount of money annually to be sent to our headquarters for undesignated giving to mission fields that are selected by the General Board of Global Ministries. We also give locally to support groups who provide services for women, youth and children. Recently we have made donations to United Methodist Youth Fellowship for summer camp, boy and girl scout troops, Teen Challenge, New Horizon Family Center and to Old River Terrace Day School.
We do our share of cooking throughout the year! Twice a year we have luncheons that are fund raising events. In March we have a soup luncheon, and in November we have a turkey dinner. It has been our practice to provide one meal during our Vacation Bible School. We also coordinate bake sales during the year to benefit our church.
